Check out this week’s sounds of summer

by ERIN KOSNAC
Staff Writer

Need a boost to get through the dog days of August?

Try a little live music.

Whether you’re a fan of country, the ’80s, modern rock or reggae, this week’s live-music offerings are just the ticket to bringing a little fun to the heat and humidity of summer’s last days.

A duo whose vocalist got her start on the karaoke stage.

A rock band whose frontwoman loves to thrash out to Godsmack.

And a former cruise ship musician who brings the feel of the islands to North Bowers Beach.

Take an island trip with Mr. BBBH

Band: Mr. BBBH

Sound: island music

Show: 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 24, J.P.’s on the Wharf, Hubbard Avenue, North Bowers Beach; no cover

Musician Jerry Fleury-Charles once worked on a cruise ship. And now, as Mr. BBBH, he brings the cruise ship feel to North Bowers Beach.

“You don’t need to go on a cruise to feel like you’re on the island,” Fleury-Charles said in a July Dover Post article. “Just come listen to Mr. BBBH.”

Every Sunday, Mr. BBBH brings the island feel to J.P.’s on the Wharf with a mix of reggae and soca music.

During his shows, Fleury-Charles treats audiences to a mix of steel drum sounds and vocals, playing both covers and original music. Among the songs most often requested are “Day O,” “Who Let the Dogs Out,” “Yellow Bird” and “Jamaica Farewell.”

And people don’t just remember his unique sound — they remember his unique name.

“There are too many Jerrys,” he said. “So being a creative man, I looked at myself in the mirror. I see I have a big head. My head is black. My head is bald. Mr. BBBH — big, black, bald head. If you call me Jerry in town, nobody will know it’s me. But if you say Mr. BBBH, everyone will know who you’re talking about.”
